Two Utahns who introduced skijoring to the state eight years ago have launched PRO Skijor, North America’s first professional skijoring tour, featuring six stops across three states and a championship weekend in Salt Lake City.
The Frontier Tour kicks off Jan. 16–17 in Heber City, offering tens of thousands in prize money.
Skijoring — from the Norwegian skikjøring, meaning “ski driving” — blends Western rodeo grit with alpine speed. In this high-octane sport, riders on horseback tow skiers or snowboarders through snowy obstacle courses packed with jumps, slalom gates, and ring grabs.
“It’s just like—boom—you’re in it,” said racer Scott Hoover. “You’re flying faster than you think, ice flying everywhere. It’s exhilarating.”
